Rep. Glenn Grothman (R-WI-06) has served as a U.S. representative for Wisconsin’s 6th congressional district since November, 2014. Previously, Grothman served on the Wisconsin State Assembly and the Wisconsin senate, and was also an attorney.
Glenn Grothman on Climate Change
In a 2014 interview on conservative talk show Voice of Christian Youth America, Grothman said that “global warming is not manmade, and there is barely any global warming at all. There’s been no global warming for the past twelve or thirteen years.” Addressing a question about the “War on Coal,” Grothman said “it’s ridiculous for the United States, of all the countries in the world, to put extra regulations on our business while the Chinese, the Indians, whatever, are building new factories all the time, and our factories are stuck saying ‘you can’t do this, you can’t do this,’ because you’ve got to reign in this global warming which doesn’t exist anyway.”
In April of 2017 at a town hall in Neenah, Wisconsin, Grothman responded to questions about climate change. “I’m old enough to remember the 1970s when they talked about global cooling,” he said. “We’ll be looking at it.”
At a town hall later in 2017, Grothman was asked about this statement. “I said we’ll look at it– I meant more years in, to determine whether we have trends here. I don’t think the global temperatures have gone up by very much over the last dozen or so years… I think if you look over a period of history, there are cold years and warm years, cold decades and warm decades, cold centuries and warm centuries.”
In a 2018 debate with opponent Dan Kohl, Grothman denounced manufacturing regulations that responded to climate change: “You’re saying the congressman who has more manufacturing jobs than anywhere else in the country is going to take the lead in putting Wisconsin manufacturers at a disadvantage compared to other places around the globe? I mean, that’s ridiculous.”
According to the League of Conservation Voters “National Environmental Scorecard,” Grothman’s voting record in 2020 earned a score of 5%, meaning his votes were “anti-environment” 95% of the time.
