Sarah Palin was the governor of Alaska from 2006 until 2009 when she resigned due to numerous ethical complaints. In 2003 she was an appointed chair on the Alaska Oil and Gas Committee where she oversaw oil and gas safety. She unsuccessfully ran for vice president of the United States in 2008 with John McCain.
Climate Change
Sarah Palin is notorious for stating the climate has always been changing and she disputes scientific evidence that humans contribute to climate change. In 2014, Palin posted a video calling global warming a “con job” and stated “no one has proven that these changes are caused by anything done by human beings via greenhouse gasses.” In 2016, Palin participated on a panel for the climate denial film Climate Hustle.
At an event on Capitol Hill in 2016 Palin claimed the government is using global warming “to have more control over us, our homes, our businesses, our families, our lives.” In the same speech, she said climate change education is indoctrinating American children. She also claimed that science is being “thrown out the window” to promote the government’s agenda. Palin has stated, “we’ve been told by fearmongers that global warming is due to man’s activities and this presents strong arguments against that in a very relatable way.”
Alaska
In 2008, Sarah Palin sued the US government for placing polar bears on the endangered species list due to a decline in sea ice. Palin undermined climate models and labeled them as “unreliable, uncertain, unproven,” when, in reality, they have a strong track record.
While Palin was Alaska’s governor, reports indicated that she “resisted, and at times subverted, scientific evidence that would support increased environmental protection in response to climate change.” In an interview she stated “a changing environment will affect Alaska more than any other state, because of our location. I’m not one, though, who would attribute it to being man-made.”
